A bakery in Belfast, Northern Ireland has refused to make a cake that supports gay marriage after a customer requested that the design should include Bert and Ernie along with a logo of a locally based LGBT group.

The owners of Ashers Baking Company in County Antrim declined to make the cake as it was not in line with their Christian beliefs.

The company’s general manager, Daniel McArthur issued this statement regarding the decision :

“We thought that this order was at odds with our beliefs. It certainly was in contradiction of what the Bible teaches….I feel if we don’t take a stand with this case, then how can we stand up against it further down the line?”

According to the BBC, the bakery is a family run business and has received backing from the Christian institute.

However the customer has now turned to the Equality Commission to review the response from the bakery, which could face a discrimination lawsuit for refusing the order.
