Filter, a narrative short film in pre-production

Filter, a narrative short film in pre-production, shares a day in the life of a woman suffering from body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) as seen through her own eyes. BDD is a disorder in which one is consumed by a non-existent or greatly embellished defect in one’s physical appearance. BDD often causes severe emotional pain and can lead to isolation and self-harm. This disorder is rarely discussed in mainstream culture, much less filmed. Filter hopes to break new ground and help raise awareness for BDD. Filter is written and produced by Riayn Fergins, and will feature a score by singer/songwriter Ivana XL. To learn more and pledge your support, visit http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/Filter/Filter. Pledges start as low as $1, so anyone can get involved and be a part of the team!

How Breaking The Rules Can Get Your Movie A Lot Of Attention!

by Ross Grayle Jones and Craig McDonald, founders of One Fat Cigar.com.

We break rules. We break a lot of rules in fact.

“You can’t build a promotional website for independent film makers to rival a Shooting People, or heaven forbid an IMDB – they’re just too big, too powerful.” So we built a site. “You can’t help film makers get distribution – distributors only want to see a film at a festival or if there’s a star attached!” So we phoned some distributors and asked – do you want to see the most exciting projects on our site? Surprisingly, no one hung up the phone. “You can’t market a film too early before its release – it’ll ruin the movie’s suspense!” We said we can and we will. Let us explain.

What if you do market your movie from early in the production and because you did there are a whole group of people who found that what you had to say exciting, entertaining. So much so, that after a short period they begin following you, become your fans… your charm and wit in the video production diary, the interviews with the AD and Cinematographer, the visual FX artist and the writer, the location scouting, or setting up the shoot. And what if they tell their friends…

“Have you heard about this new movie, been following it throughout the production process – looks amazing – the producer’s crazy – do you know they held the cameraman on some old rope and then threw him down a pot hole with no restraints! Then they showed us it in first person. How the camera guy survived I don’t know.”

“WOW, sounds awesome”, replies the friend. “What’s the film about?”

“No idea!”

And there’s a reason why they don’t know.

They’re following your movie because of you and your crew. You haven’t told them the plot, in fact it added to the mystery – “I wonder what it’s about”. And you certainly haven’t shared the gobsmacking twist and brilliant payoff. Or, that you’ve made the movie for a packet of chips and a dorito, and that your house is on the line if it fails… But they’re there anyway, believing in you and enjoying your story. Alright, but this is all assumption, what if’s… Here’s where it gets interesting.

Google itself says that there will be more than 60,000 searches for ‘behind the scenes’. And that’s just today! This year there will be more than 219,000,000 searches. That’s a lot of people. Now let me ask you this.

Which film would you go and see? The film your friend recommended or the film that Hollywood told you about with 80ft billboards and $20m ad campaign? I would see the former. Let’s ask another question. If you have seen a trailer and liked it would you go and see the movie? Yes? Maybe? Ok. Now, what if you’ve seen a trailer, watched an interview, been shown the location where the film was set, knew how the runner was electrocuted while trying to save the lighting equipment from the rain? The ‘maybe’ might become a ‘Yes’ – even if it is just to see if the movie is as bad as you think it is! There are hundreds of thousands of people, like you, who want to follow a great story.

And then there’s our little indie site, One Fat Cigar.com. Yes, it can drive a tonne of traffic to your production and get it ranked in search engines, fast. And yes, your projects are organically promoted to film fans interested in your productions, and of course you can crew your production from thousands of talented crew too. Even better, the most exciting projects are seen by leading distributors and sales agents looking for the next hot ticket.

But that’s not the real reason why we built the site.

The truth is. A movie isn’t just about a great movie. It’s about the great story behind the movie. Would Citizen Kane be regarded as the finest movie of all time unless there had been controversy over whether Orson Wells wrote it or not? Would El Mariachi have achieved such fame if Robert Rodriguez hadn’t paid for it through medical experiments? Probably not. Because when it comes down to it, we don’t go to see a movie because of the size of the budget. We see a movie because we like the people who made it. We see the movie because we like the cast and the crew, and we like the idea.

And that’s why we built One Fat Cigar.com. To help you tell the story behind the story – as it happens – to people who can’t help but believe in you and want to spread the word about your movie. And we do – which is why we broke the rules built the site that no one said would work. Apparently they were wrong…

Today there are more than a thousand professional film makers using the website and that number is growing daily.

And we try to keep things simple. In takes a few minutes to get used to, as facebook did the first I tried to learn that, but after a little time, complex functionality is made straight-forward through our ‘dashboard’ interface where in one place you can upload a project, add your cast and crew to the project, still photos and images, trailers, video production diaries, interviews to help you tell your story. Our messaging system is of the easy-to-use variety, and our newsfeed system automatically updates fans every time a new status update is posted – inviting them back to your project. And if, by chance, you do have a problem you can simply email us using the contact form and we promise a prompt and helpful response. Every day we strive to improve our service for your benefit.

There are no shortcuts to building a fan base, we know it takes time. But we give you the tools and the technology to promote your movie and a place film fans are actively seeking to discover the latest hot movies, and hidden gems.

Promoting your first project costs an introductory price of just £10 (c.$15) per quarter and we’re so confident that you’ll have brilliant value out of our site that we’ll take on the risk for you. If you’re not 100% satisfied our offer, please cancel within 30 days and we’ll happily give you your money back – no questions asked.

So here is our challenge to you!

Break the rules and let us hear the story behind your movie. To register please go to http://www.onefatcigar.com now.

Ross and Craig,

I am currently filming a documentary on plastic pollution in the high seas. I just came of a 15 day sailing expedition from Bermuda to the Azores Islands aboard the Sea Dragon.
I am now in Europe following an Artist who was on board the mission. He was commissioned by the state of Holland to build a life sized reef out of plastic trash he collects on beaches around the world. He joined this expedition in part with the scientists who are conducting the research.

Here is a small teaser from the journey on the boat.
