CBS TV Studios have announced the new Star Trek series will go into production this fall.
Filmmakers in Canada will be rejoiced to know that new Star Trek episodes will be filmed in Toronto beginning a new chapter in the franchise’s history.
Produced by Bryan Fuller, the new Star Trek series will feature a special US premiere launch episode on the CBS TV Network in early 2017. Eugene Roddenberry will come on board as a co-executive producer along with Trevor Roth. Nicholas Meyer, who wrote and directed classic “Star Trek: Ii: The Wrath of Khan” will also write and act as a consulting producer.
The new Star Trek episodes will be subsequently released on CBS All Access.
Since the last episode of "Star Trek: Enterprise" in 2005 there hasn’t been a new series and with the 50th Anniversary this year it was only a matter of time before the franchise would need to return to TV sets.
CBS announced in November 2015 that there would be a new Star Trek series, however, it will not be set in the current timeline of the recent Star Trek movies directed by J.J. Abrams. It is rumored that the timeline for the new series will take place after the original episodes with Captain Kirk but before TNG.
