Colin Firth triumphs as 2011 Oscar winners revealed

It was a great night for Colin Firth, who won the Oscar for his portrayal of King George VI and audience favorite Natalie Portman was also awarded for Black Swan .

The 2011 Oscars, hosted by Anne Hathaway and James Franco was a star studded event like every year, but the hype surrounding The King s Speech and The Social Network made the anticipation even higher.

Christian Bale won Best Supporting Actor for The Figher while co-star Melissa Leo also garnered Best Actress in a Supporting Role.

Unsurprisingly, Toy Story 3 which Tarantino had publicly claimed to be the best film of 2010 won Best Animated Feature Film.

Technical achievement at the Oscars

Alice in Wonderland won the Art Direction award with Robert Sromberg and Karen O Hara's production design work.

Inception directed by Christopher Nolan was a sci-fi masterpiece and beautifully shot by Wally Pfister, winning Best Cinemtography.

Angus Wall and Kirk Baxter won The Best Film Editing Oscar for The Social Network

Tom Hooper left with the Oscar for his direction in the The King s Speech , a favourite of Oscar voters for its captivating look at the struggles of a King as he overcomes his speech impediment.

Richard King won Best Sound Editing for Inception and Lora Hirschberg, Gary A. Rizzo and Ed Novick went home with the Oscar for Best Sound Mixing. Inception was a clear favourite in the technical department having innovated filmmaking to a very high standard above its competitors.

The Best Visual Effects Oscar also went to Inception with the work of Paul Franklin, Andrew Lockley, Peter Bebb and Chris Corbould recognized.

Charles Ferguson and Audrey Marrs were awarded Best Documentary Feature for Inside Job .

Danish film In a Better World won Best Foreign Language Film, beating Biutiful which had been a favourite.

Best Makeup went to Rick Baker and Dave Elsey in The Wolfman

Oscar winning music

Beating stiff competition from legendary Hans Zimmer and Alexandre Desplat, The Social Network won Best Music Score, composed by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross

We Belong Together won Best Original Song from the Toy Story 3 soundtrack by Randy Newman

Best Picture Oscar

The hype for this award was intense, and so was the competition from Inception to The Fighter and The King's Speech .

The Best Picture category had been expanded to 10 this year, with The King's Speech winning the fierce competition and leaving with the most coveted Oscar of the night.

The Lost Thing by Shaun Tan and Andrew Ruhemann won Best Animated Short

God of Love by Luke Matheny was awarded the Best Short Film in the live action category.

Best Oscar Screenplays

The Best Writing (Adapted Screenplay) went to Hollywood screenwriting maveric Aaron Sorkin for The Social Network

The Best Original Screenplay by David Seidler went to The King s Speech
