Carney was criticised for his views on Keira Knightley following an interview he did with The Independent about ‘Begin Again’, which he shot with the actress and where he talked about how she “wasn’t a singer and wasn’t a guitar player.” He also said that he really wanted to work with musicians and actors that could “play their instruments properly,” suggesting the actress was unable to perform her role.
‘Begin Again’ came out in 2013 and was a critical success. The film was also nominated for an Oscar and starred James Corden, Hailee Seinfeld and Mark Ruffalo. The director’s comments were widely reported and condemned.
