Gun laws have to be changed or thousands more will die

Batman shootings raise questions about Gun Crime

How many more people have to die before laws are tightened on gun possession? This epidemic continues to spiral out of control.

Today’s Batman Premiere massacre is just one of many horrendous and unfortunate incidents to grip America. So many young people have been killed, so many innocent victims have died needlessly. It’s so easy to get a gun in America, it’s practically a birthright. But, when you have such lax controls over possession it’s inevitable that people who are in unstable situations become a threat to everyone else. This is a small minority of people, but with over 40% of Americans owning a weapon, is it not time to do something about it?

The right to bear arms has led to the deaths of thousands across the nation each year. The very idea of the right to self-protection is extremely important but at what cost should people pay? In stark contrast, Europe has the tightest gun laws meaning that it is very difficult, if not impossible to buy or acquire a gun. It is very rare for gun crime to be repeated on a daily basis and it’s not a leading cause of death in homicides.

It’s a fact that European culture is different, but when you look at the stark difference, should Americans not ask “Why should we make it easy for people to possess guns who are a threat to everyone else?”

Without a fundamental change in attitude towards gun crime in America, expect to see more massacres and fatal shootouts in all walks of life. It’s a very dark analogy, but it’s a cold fact. The laws in my view should be changed to protect people but also give them a right to self-defense without the use of guns. It’s time to make this change or thousands more will die.

What do you think?

It is not about the gun this mad man used. It’s about the mad mad.
Did the gun cause the deaths of these innocent people? No. Was it used to cause the deaths of these innocent people? Yes. A gun, just like a hammer or screwdriver, is a tool. It can be used for good or evil, law enforcement or violent crime, personal protection or assault. (If guns are so evil, why are we not bothered by police officers carrying them? Ah, we trust the officers of the law to USE them for good, and not for evil.)
Let’s paint a picture, shall we, of your gun-free utopia. “Unstable” man decides for whatever twisted reason to attempt to end the lives of innocent civilians at a movie theater. He has no legal way of obtaining a gun, and don’t happen to know any underground sources of black market firearms (those will always exist, providing the criminals of America with firepower), so he resorts to other means of deadly force at his easy disposal. Home-made explosives, deadly chemical concoctions, or even a fixed blade weapon such as a machete ($15 at Wal-Mart). If he employs any of these easily available and deadly tools, many would be killed, many more wounded, and fear would strikes the heart of the american people. Now, this ‘utopia’ is a ridiculous concept, because firearm laws only apply to law abiding citizens. There will always be underground, black-market sources of firearms. And the only people who know about those sources are criminals and members of the underworld. Cocaine is illegal. Yet anyone who wants to can access it. Pot is illegal, yet anyone who wants it can get it. Cuban cigars are contraband, but I know people who’ve puffed on them. I’ve never done any of those things, because I am a law abiding citizen. The only thing keeping me from smoking dope is my personal conviction and desire to obey the law. If I didn’t have that, I could get my hands on what ever I want. You live in a dream world where people obey laws, are generally good and all care about preserving the environment for their grandchildren. If laws kept the peace, we wouldn’t need peace officers (with guns) to enforce them.

Yeah, gun-control laws will work much better than the laws against murder that already exist. How can anyone in their right mind think that someone bent on killing masses of people will be swayed by one more law banning the instrument?
