Word is there is no director for 'Star Trek 3' despite J.J. Abrams previously backing Roberto Orci to sit in the captain's chair.
In fact, Paramount have kept ultra quiet about it since the info was revealed by Deadline. It looks like at this stage Orci will stay on to produce the picture but as of yet there is no one to replace him.
Following the initial backlash from fans about Roberto Orci's lack of directorial experience, there was optimism in the film industry that Orci's previous credits made him the best candidate to take on what J.J. Abrams had left behind. It wasn't going to be easy, especially for a first-time director but now it looks like he didn't match expectations, or at least, was not the right choice.
However, with this latest revelation could we be seeing another big name taking the Star Trek universe on a bold new direction?
J.J. Abrams is currently tied to the production of 'Star Wars : 7' but it's not unrealistic to see Star Trek 3 being pushed back if he were to come back. That doesn't look likely (although Star Trek fans would welcome this move).
Edgar Wright has been named as one of the potential candidates, but without confirmation, Spike Lee could be directing this picture for all we know. We'll just have to wait and see.
