It has been rumored that producer Joel Silver has reached out to Mel Gibson to reprise his role as Martin Riggs in Lethal Weapon 5.

Lethal Weapon 5 could be just around the corner for Mel Gibson, who faces an uphill battle to win back his fans after his custody battle turned sour and became a web sensation. Last year the film was set to go into production but he had declined to get involved as Richard Donner, the director of the previous Lethal Weapons, had fallen out with Joel Silver, and was not onboard.

Gibson recently returned to his action persona in 'Edge of Darkness' after 8 years, but the film performed less than average at the box office. 'Cold Warrior', another project being developed by him and Lethal weapon writer Shane Black could put in motion Mel Gibson's return to the franchise and it could not have come at a better time. Mel Gibson, one of Hollywood's biggest names has fallen to a career low, and has been dealt a major blow recently as Leonardo DiCaprio pulled out of a film he was set to direct about the Vikings.

What happens next could be a make or break decision, but the pundits in Hollywood believe that for him to reprise his role in Lethal Weapon 5 would be a good thing, and lets face it, we do enjoy those movies.

The Lethal Weapon franchise ended in 1998 with Leathal Weapon 4, an action packed blockbuster that wasn't well received. It did, however, earn over $280 million at the box office (US and international). If the new sequel goes ahead, co-star Danny Glover's character, Murtaugh, will be 73. Gibson's age factor will also come into play and fans of the franchise will remember all to well the classic line often repeated in the previous sequels: "I'm not too old for this s***!" Maybe this time, Murtaugh and Riggs will be chanting, "We're too old for this s***!"
