2017 promises to be another bumper year for the Hollywood blockbuster, but which films are you looking forward to? Here a five of the best movies coming out this year.
Blade Runner 2049
This October, a mere few weeks before Halloween, fanboys will finally be able to right an unwritten thirty five year wrong when the sequel to Blade Runner hits the big screen. When I say wrong, I am not referring to the original movie of course, that was perfection, instead, the wrong I refer to is the lack of a sequel in the first, something that today would be a given. Directed by Denis Villeneuve, under strict guidance from Ridley Scott, the film promises not to over rely on CGI and has managed to bring its original star, Harrison Ford, back into action. This time around, the Hollywood veteran, who is also in the process of revitalizing Indiana Jones, will be joined by Ryan Gosling, Robin Wright, Jared Leto and Lennie James of Walking Dead fame. The story should pick up 30 years after the last outing when a new Blade Runner, LAPD Officer K (Ryan Gosling), uncovers a closely guarded secret which could cause societal havoc. Cue search for Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), who has been missing since the first film ended, and will need to step up and save the day once again.
If it is laughs that you are looking for, give The House a try, starring Will Ferrell and Amy Poehler as the husband and wife team that accidentally destroy their daughter’s college fund. After racking their brains as to what to do next, the hapless pair stumble upon the novel idea of setting up a casino in their basement. This being a Will Ferrell movie, things get quickly get out of hand and chaos ensues as the ridiculousness of the situation becomes exposed. The House hits the big screen in late June and if you can’t wait until then to get your casino fix, then you face one of two options, a.) You can set up a casino in your basement like they do in the film or b.) Find and download an online casino app and give it try at home. The beauty of the latter option is that it allows you to experiment with casino games without risking anything and in that way warms you up for the premiere of the movie in June.
The September release, American Made, promises to tell the real-life story of Barry Seal, a former TWA pilot who was recruited by the CIA in an effort to counter the developing communist threat that loomed over Central America, while Ronald Reagan lead the nation. Starring Tom Cruise and directed by Doug Liman, the plot aims to detail the significant role that Seal played in this major CIA covert operation, a duty he performed so well that it would lead to him integrating himself within the infamous Medellin Cartel, ruled by the notorious Pablo Escobar, an interference that would ultimately expose the White House and Reagan after the Iran-Contra affair became public. Look out too for star performances from Sarah Wright as Lucy Seal and Domhnall Gleeson.
This Spring, Shaun of the Dead director Edgar Wright, brings us the British American co-funded tale of an extremely talented young getaway driver that is forced to survive the criminal underworld. That is before he meets the girl of his dreams, played here by Lily James, through which he spies an opportunity to escape from his criminal life and its boss (Kevin Spacey) and make a clean getaway. In a not unfamiliar tale, he is duty bound to run one last big heist before he can make his exit, which of course goes wrong and duly threatens his life, love and freedom. An all-star cast is made up from Jamie Foxx, Jon Hamm, Eiza González, Meryl Streep and Ansel Elgort in leading roles, and with a script typically dripping with Brit wit, this comedy action crime story should provide a few laughs on its release this Spring.
The highly anticipated upcoming Warner Bros and DC Films super hero ensemble blockbuster, Justice League, will be with us later this year. Picking up where last year’s Batman Vs Superman ended, an admitted misfire, Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) is left to assess the worsening situation in the wake of Superman’s death at the hands of Doomsday. What the Bat decides is that the best move forward would be to reach out to the other DC universe superheroes in order to put together a team of crime-fighters to defend the earth from every kind of threat. The team assembled includes Diana Prince/Wonder Woman, played here by Gal Gadot, Barry Allen/The Flash (Ezra Miller), Vic Stone/Cyborg (Ray Fisher) and Atlantean warrior king Arthur Curry/Aquaman played by Jason Momoa. Directed by Man of Steel and Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice’s Zack Snyder, the film promises to be a thrilling action packed, full throttle throw down from DC to Marvel that they are not going to have 2017 all to themselves. Let’s just hope it improves on BvS.
