Neil Armstrong dies : The world mourns a legend

It was a defining moment in the history of humanity. When Neil Armstrong stepped foot on the moon, it brought the world together, and it was one of the 20th century's most memorable moments.

It is believed Neil Armstrong died earlier today at the age of 82 after his family released a short statement however it is not known exactly when he passed away. The astronaut, who's famous words told the great story of mankind's journey into outer-space, spoke the words that would touch a generation.

"That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind"

It was the Soviet Sputnik satellite launch in 1957 that started a race towards the moon. In 1961 President Kennedy defiantly told the nation that it would be a national priority to get an American on the moon in the next decade.

The Apollo 11 mission was launched on July 16th 1969 headed by former Navy fighter pilot Neil Armstrong. The spacecraft safely touched down on the moon on the 20th July, 1969 at the height of the cold war. It was a harrowing trip, and almost technically inconceivable. It had been a fantasy for decades, but when the astronauts of the Apollo 11 mission safely returned after their landing on the moon, it was a moment many would never forget.
