Star Wars 7 in development : Disney makes history

Disney to acquire Lucasfilm

A new star wars movie has been announced after Disney revealed that it would be buying Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion.

Lucasfilm founder Geroge Lucas will continue to work as a creative consultant on the new movies as part of the deal and Kathleen Kennedy will become President of Lucasfilms.

Fans of the Star Wars movies can expect to see Star Wars 7 coming out in 2015 although we have yet to hear of any cast or production announcements.

Disney, which already owns Marvel Entertainment and Pixar Animation Studios will pioneer the future of entertainment in Hollywood with the addition of the Lucasfilm history. This will also include it's enormous merchandising business, spanning thousands of products. This deal could also lead to other Star Wars TV series, reboots and franchises not related to the actual last 6 movies.

This is a defining moment for the film industry, and with Walt Disney Studios creating a new era of Star Wars films, fans will be thrilled to know that this legacy will continue.

Bob Iger, CEO of Disney released this statement via THR :

“This transaction combines a world-class portfolio of content including Star Wars, one of the greatest family entertainment franchises of all time, with Disney’s unique and unparalleled creativity across multiple platforms, businesses, and markets to generate sustained growth and drive significant long-term value.”

George Lucas statement

"It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I’ve always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime. I’m confident that with Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy, and having a new home within the Disney organization, Star Wars will certainly live on and flourish for many generations to come."
