True Grit to revive Clint eastwood style westerns?

The Coen Brothers ‘True Grit has become the biggest box office hit for a Western movie since the 1990s. The Golden era of Western films with Clint Eastwood had long disappeared with the genre in significant decline as the cold war, terrorism, disaster and family movies started to dominate the movie business

Clint Eastwood’s 1992 hit ‘Unforgiven’ won numerous Academy Awards and was seen as the last major western film of a generation. While Clint Eastwood didn’t retire from films, western films took a dive. In recent memory, ‘3:10 To Yuma’ starring Russell Crowe and ‘Open Range’ directed and starring Kevin Costner never reached True Grit’s success.

True Grit trailer and review

True Grit has an all-star cast including Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon and Josh Brolin. The film has also garnered many Award nominations and it is likely they will get the attention of the Oscars. Critics have also named ‘True Grit’ as one of the best, if not, the best movie the Coen Brothers have ever made. Whether audiences will feel the same way is another story, but so far, it would seem the film is making huge headway on what was seen as an over exhausted genre.

The film has the potential to revive the western genre and bring back its glory to a 21st century audience.
